Congratulations, Najib Yusuf Ubandiya!

One of our DataCamp Donates scholars, Najib Yusuf Ubandiya, entered DataCamp's most recent global competition — open to participants from all over the world — and won. His win has earned him a place in our fourth year of the DataCamp Donates partnership, and the whole Ebonyi Laureates community couldn't be prouder. I've learned various tech skills since late high school, but the problem was that I didn't have a roadmap. With DataCamp, I went from sampling parts of different apps to learning through a clear roadmap provided on the platform.

What drew me to data science?

My love for numbers. Growing up, I followed football, and beyond the scores, I loved comparing the statistics behind the games and seeing how, to some extent, you could predict a future result using data from previous ones.

My background

I've been a tech enthusiast since I was a child playing video games on my family's desktop computer. I wanted to major in Computer Science in college, and thankfully, I got a spot to study it. But soon after my admission, a strike was called, and I had to stay home and wait for it to be called off.

Instead of sitting around doing nothing, I started taking online courses, and it wasn't as easy as I thought — I didn't know my way around the huge tech space. That was before I discovered DataCamp.

How did I discover DataCamp?

I discovered DataCamp through Ebonyi Laureates when I was lost in the tech space. That year, they partnered with DataCamp Donates to give out learning slots to interested members, and I was fortunate enough to get a spot. The organisation held a seminar for our cohort, during which DataCamp's platform, including the learning-track section, was explained to us.

What were my goals when I started?

My initial goal was to establish a solid footing in the tech space and prepare for college, and I did just that. As time passed, my goals developed, and I'm currently studying large language models and generative AI in preparation for a master's degree after I finish my undergraduate studies.

What works well for me about DataCamp?

First, the teaching is so well done, and the exercises are so practical that you can't go through a course without gaining real knowledge. The step-by-step process helps me gradually build up the scope of each course. The daily challenges, learning streaks and project space have all been very helpful to my learning journey.

Benefits I've gained from my DataCamp Donates scholarship

Sharing my DataCamp certifications on LinkedIn and telling my learning story on the platform has connected me with amazing people and job opportunities. I got my first internship in research and data within a year, and graduated from that into a full-time role — even while still a student. Now I have another internship in Generative AI, a skill I'm particularly interested in and hope to pursue further in my master's programme.

All my life, all I ever wanted was to pass through medical school and come out as a renowned medical professional. Working actively in a hospital was something I dreamed of. Years went by, and I was close to realising that dream, until something different caught my interest and changed the trajectory of my career.

It happened during one of the last classes of my final year, in a Molecular Biology class, while we were being taught bioinformatics. That was the first time I heard of data science — and, by a stroke of luck, it came from a professor whose earlier classes I'd missed, but whose lecture that morning I happened to attend. I remember vividly how he explained the significance of patient data in medical analysis, opening my eyes to the world of data science in healthcare.

From then on, I took a huge interest in the field, researching and watching countless YouTube videos to gain more clarity. By the end of it, I was sure I no longer wanted to work directly in a hospital to play my part in healthcare; I wanted something different — something that would give me the flexibility to explore patient data in ways that could help solve real healthcare problems.

Every journey has a price, and sometimes that price is an obstacle you have to overcome to move forward. In my case, I knew what I wanted, but I didn't have a platform to make it happen — until Laureates Science, Innovation and Education Initiative (Ebonyi Laureates) came to my rescue, through a Facebook post about their partnership with DataCamp Donates to offer scholarships in data science. I never knew there was a remote data academy so structured and well organised until I came across DataCamp through the opportunity Ebonyi Laureates offered me. Coming from a non-tech background, I couldn't have asked for a more beginner-friendly environment.

It's been two years since I started learning on DataCamp, and I keep getting better in my pursuit of becoming a renowned healthcare data scientist. I've used the skills I've gained to launch my own portfolio website, showcasing both personal and open-source projects — none of which would have been possible without DataCamp. I've also worked on contract-based data science and analysis projects for clients I found through LinkedIn and Upwork, and it means a great deal to see myself deliver that kind of value, having had no knowledge of data science just two years ago.

I'm currently deepening my knowledge of machine learning, building skills in medical imaging, deep learning, NLP and Streamlit through the Machine Learning Scientist with Python track — all of which I intend to use in pursuing a research-based MSc in Biomedical Engineering, focused on neuroimaging, with the ultimate goal of becoming a professor of neuroscience. These dreams feel within reach because of the strong foundation the DataCamp scholarship gave me, an opportunity I'm forever grateful for.

The impact of DataCamp on my journey to becoming a resourceful healthcare data scientist cannot be overstated, and my story wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the opportunity Ebonyi Laureates gave me. I only hope to keep improving and carrying the good news about DataCamp forward. Until then, I'll be back at my computer, exploring data.
